William Maurice Whitis, 92 of Kempner, Texas died Monday October 28, 2019 at a local nursing home. He was born July 6, 1927 in Kempner, Texas to parents William Lester Whitis and Eupha Ollie (Wheeler) Whitis. After Maurice graduated from Lampasas High School, he entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Hula Zoe Priest, she preceded him in death after 60 years of marriage. After he was discharged he moved to the Dallas area and began working for Vought Aircraft. He worked his way up to superintendent. He retired with 33 years with the company and moved back to Lampasas with Hula and began ranching on his place near Kempner. He enjoyed welding and breaking horses. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Hawkiins (Jackie) Son, Bill Whitis (Susan) Grandchildren; Christi Gimber (Ed), Dennis Gregory (Robin), Carey Adams (Jason), Casey Williams (Todd), Lester Whitis (Randi), Cody Whitis (Tabitha) 11 great-grandchildren Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife Hula Zoe Whitis, by daughter Rebecca Ownby, by brothers, W.L., Donald, Delbert, Kline, Glen and Albert and by sisters Elaine Rushing and Avis Sparkman. A memorial service will be held Friday November 1, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. Maurice’s body will be cremated. His remains will be buried at Kempner Cemetery at a later date.
