Vera was born on November 8, 1929, in Manor, TX to Thomas and Annie (Bennett) Menefee.  Vera and her twin sister were the second youngest of 13.   She grew up in Manor and graduated from Manor High School in 1948.  After high school,  she attended Nixon-Clay Business College in Austin earning an educational secretarial certificate in 1949.  In 1953, she married Charles Newton and they immediately moved to the ranch where they would raise their children in Burnet County, TX.  Vera lived on this ranch in the same house from then until she was no longer able to independently care for herself.  Vera was also a member of Naruna Baptist Church from the moment she arrived in the area.

While her children were growing up she spent most of her time as a homemaker, making sure her family was taken care of.  She then was employed with Lampasas ISD for 23 years as a secretary for the administration.   She loved family get-togethers and the cooking, visiting, and camaraderie that came from them.  Children were so special to Vera and she watched many kids even after retiring from the school district.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Newton; her daughter, Melissa Jordan; her great-granddaughter, Kenley Cattles; three brothers and eight sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Debra Cattles and husband, Kenneth, Sr.; her grandchildren, Keri Roseberry and husband, Warren, Kenneth Cattles, Jr. and wife, Bonnie, Trisa Pugh, Tracey Pugh, and Colton Jordan and wife, Jessica; her great-grandchildren, Kate Roseberry, Ella Roseberry, Barrett Cattles, Blake Cattles, Genie Morgan, Melissa Morgan,  and Mackenzie Jordan; her great-great-grandchild, Elara Hill; her brother, Dee Menefee and her son-in-law, Lee Jordan.
