Thelma Herring of Lampasas, age 100, passed away Friday, October 29th. Thelma was born on January 11, 1921, in Belton, Texas, to F.E. and Estelle Hayter. A graduate of Belton High School, Thelma, and D.C. Herring were married on August 3, 1941. They had celebrated 52 years of marriage at the time of D.C.'s passing in 1992.
Thelma was a salesperson for J.C. Penney company in Lampasas for over 20 years and enjoyed selling and waiting on customers. She was a loving and devoted wife, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Thelma enjoyed being around her family, and she looked forward to vacations and holidays with her family. She especially enjoyed traveling with the bank travel club to many vacation spots in the United States. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Kempner, Texas. Although she struggled with Dementia during the last years of her life, the family notes there were four things Dementia never took from Thelma: her knowledge and love of God; the love she had for all her family; her gratitude for all those who took care of her; and her wonderful sense of humor!
Thelma Herring was preceded in death by her parents, F.E. and Estelle Hayter; two brothers, Russell Hayter and Alvie Hayter; four sisters, Veda Mae Clarkston, Nell Webb, Ruth Hayter, and Alice Van Dyke; and a son, Larry Neal Herring of Kempner.
She is survived by a son, Glen Herring (Denise) of Lampasas; daughter, Darlene Rutland (Jim) of Lampasas; 11 grandchildren, Steve (Andreas) Herring of Lampasas; Tracy Herring of Cedar Park; B.J. Herring of Lampasas, Kris Herring of Kempner, Jase (Malea) Herring of Lampasas, Jeremy (Jennica) Herring of Lampasas, Kasey (Joe) Schwartzer of Lampasas; David (Beth) Rutland of Aledo; Mark (Julie) Rutland of San Antonio; Jeff (Stephanie) Rutland of Lampasas, Ben (Alisan) Rutland of Plano, she is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Ima Locklear, of Temple, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express appreciation to the employees and staff of Lampasas Nursing and Rehab, and New Century Hospice, for the loving care given over the past two years.
