Stephen Allen Howle was born August 16, 1926 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Benjamin Oscar and Mary Louise Cox Howle. He graduated from Wichita Falls High School by way of correspondence after World War II, as he had joined the Navy to serve his country at the age of 17. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1947. Following his discharge, he attended OU, then married Ethel Vee Johnson on September 2, 1948. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a Shriner, an a member of Maskat Temple in Wichita Falls. Steve began his career as an independent masonry contractor with his uncle, W. P. Howle, and for many years was blessed to work alongside many who were and are influential in the industry: Robert L. Guyler, Lance Walker, Rex Johnson, Bill Crawford and Ron Ischy to name but a few. He was later associated with Elgin Butler Brick and represented them throughout their southern region. In his retirement, his passion was golf, golf and young people. Thanks to Van Berry, he taught golf lessons for many years at Hancock Park Golf Course, and there was no bigger fan of Badger Golf than Steve. Many of those he taught went on to play golf in college; some of his students coach the sport today. Steve is survived by his wife, Ethel; his daughter, Heather Howle Oliver; his daughter, Shawna Howle Traweek; his son-in-law, Tony Traweek; Robert Oliver; six grandchildren, Judith Ann McGhee (Kelly), Adam Traweek (Brooke), Ross Oliver, Ryan Traweek (Jackie), Rex Oliver (Audrey), Garrett Traweek (Ashley); and eight great-grandchildren, Hudson, Audrey, June, Rhett, Ty, Walter, Luke, and Brandt. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ben. There will be a private burial and a celebration of life memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hancock Park Golf Association, 312 East Third, Lampasas.
