Sidney Yates

July 15, 1926 — April 4, 2016

Sidney “Harold” Robert Yates, 89, passed peacefully in his sleep the morning of April 4, 2016. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Clear Creek Baptist Church in Kempner with burial following at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Scott's Funeral Home of Copperas Cove.

Sidney was the son of the late Noah and Alpha Colley Yates. He was born July 15, 1926 on Nealy Ridge in Dickenson County, Virginia. He attended school in Sand Lick, Virginia until the 7th grade at which time he started working on his Daddy and Mother’s farm. In the early 40’s he moved to Norfolk, Virginia and worked in the ship yard. At the age of 17, Sidney enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Asiatic/Pacific campaign during World War II and continued to faithfully serve until his honorable discharge in 1945. One evening in early 1947, a dark haired, dark eyed beauty by the name of Eula Sutherland whistled at Sidney and won his heart and they were married later that year on December 22, 1947. To this union three children were born. During his 89 years Sidney had several occupations to include lumberjack, coal miner, plumber and he even worked in the auto factories. In 1961 he and his family moved to Copperas Cove where he became a carpenter’s apprentice under the direction of the late Carl Jones. Mr. Jones taught him well and helped Sidney get his start in the home building business which lasted until his retirement in the early 2000’s. Sidney was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church for over 40 years.

Sidney is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eula Yates; son, Michael Yates; daughters, Carolyn Osik and husband, Warren, Jessica Perez and husband, Ed Bowen; grandchildren, Heather Rein and husband, Pete, Wendy Osik, Kasey Carlton and husband, Cooper, Sydney Rhea Perez (his namesake), Garrett Perez and Remington Bowen; sisters Nevalee Osborne, Lura June Phillips, Trulah Edwards, Patsy Barton, Dinah Deel and husband, Willard, and Rebecca Mondrage and one brother-in-law, Doyle Dingus. Sidney was also looking forward to the birth of his first great granddaughter, baby Kenlie Kohl due in July.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ray Yates and James Caudle Yates; sisters, Dietta Yates and Bethleen Dingus; one sister-in-law; numerous brothers-in-law and a daughter-in-law, Teresa Yates.
