Roy Lee Smith, 92, of Lampasas passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022. Services will be held at First Street Church of Christ on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 2 pm with a visitation an hour prior. Interment will follow at Hurst Ranch Cemetery in Star. Roy was born September 15, 1929, in Roswell, NM to Homer and Lillie (Hext) Smith and was raised in Cherokee, TX. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy and retired at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. During his time in the service, he served in the Korean War and was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. Following his retirement, he served in the reserves for a number of years. After his time in the service, he taught Industrial Arts in Freer, TX then worked for Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos from 1968-1985 then moved to the Star area in 1985, returning to Lampasas in 2001. Roy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his family dearly but also loved his coffee group with a crew of friends from around town. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many things for people at no charge, including dominoes and canes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda in 2018; son, David Smith in 2006; brothers, S.L. Smith, Jack Smith, and Lawrence Smith. Survivors include his daughter, Donna Helm, and husband, Steve; sister, Jane Grumbles; grandchildren, Walt Smith, D'Ann Cogburn and husband Brandon, Kristan Duncan, Nocona Koenig and husband Darin, Stevie Helm and wife, Rose, Shane Helm and wife, Stephanie; 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
