SGM Raymond J. Thompson, US Army (Ret.), age 81 of Kempner passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Temple.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Clear Creek Baptist Church in Kempner, with Rev. Thomas Edwards officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday at Scott’s Funeral Home.
Mr. Thompson was born on August 25, 1932 in Glasgow, Kentucky, to the late William Powers and Bessie Staples Thompson. He grew up in Glasgow, Kentucky and graduated from Glasgow High School. He married Barbara Izetta Houchens on May 2, 1953. He entered the US Army at a young age and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired as a Sgt. Major in 1979 with over 20 years of service. He and his wife moved to Kempner in 1977. She preceded him in death on November 4, 2003. He was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by a daughter, Tina Bishop and husband John of Belton; four sons, Terry Thompson and wife Brenda of Kempner, Chuck Thompson and wife Angela of Matthews, NC, Mark Thompson and wife Denise of Katy and Jason Thompson of Trophy Club; one sister, Nettie Ruth Bingham of Paducah, KY; 11 grandchildren, Michelle Thompson, Jennifer Hoelscher and husband Jason, David Thompson, Stacy Thompson, Dylan Thompson, Kayla Bishop, Marcy Thompson, Colt Thompson, Chucky Thompson, Taylor Bishop, Abbi Thompson; and one great grandson, Ryden Ray Hoelscher.
