Polly Hewitt

Polly Hewitt, age 94, passed away in Lampasas, Texas on Monday morning, April 9, 2019.  She was born, Mildred Pauline McBeth, January 17, 1925 in O’Brien, Haskell County, Texas to E.A. and Nellie McBeth.  She attended high school in Weinert where she was a cheerleader, band member, 1941 homecoming queen, editor of the yearbook and later a teacher.  At 17, she attended Wayland Baptist College in Plainview and at 19 went back to Weinert to teach 4th grade.  Polly always had a love of fashion and owned the Cinderella Dress Shops in both Weinert and Rising Star, Texas. She continued her education at Hardin Simmons College and later graduated from North Texas State with a major in Home Economics and a double minor in Chemistry and Art.  Her first job offer after graduation was as a buyer for Neiman Marcus.    During WWII, she worked at Consolidated Aircraft Co. (now Lockheed Martin) in Fort Worth and served her country as a Rosie the Riveter installing the bomb bay side panels on the B-24 Liberator.  Her contributions to the war effort are recognized at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.   She married George W. Hewitt January 23, 1954.  They lived in Lakeside and Polly was very active in the Garden Club and the Azle Band Boosters.  She drove thousands of miles following her daughters to band competitions and spent countless hours helping with fund raisers.  When the girls attended Howard Payne University, she continued as a band booster and designed and made travel uniforms for the HPU band.   She was a charter member of the Lakeside Baptist Church.  After George and Polly retired and moved to Copperas Cove, Texas she joined 1st Baptist Church of Copperas Cove.  She continued to share her love of fashion and supported the community by creating many costumes for church and school musical productions.    Polly was preceded in death by her parents, Ezra Alexander and Nellie Frankie Earp McBeth of Rising Star, TX, one sister, Vivian Maurine Johnson of Sacramento, and George W. Hewitt of Copperas Cove, her husband of 53 years.  She is survived by her sister-in-law Catherine Hewitt Carter of Killeen and two daughters, Kay Hewitt of Copperas Cove and Jani Hewitt Edwards and husband Mickey of Lampasas.   Polly was proud of her four grandchildren and their families:  Caety Edwards, Becci Scarborough Hooten and husband Nathan, Reagan Edwards, and Greg Scarborough and wife Crystal.  She leaves behind a strong heritage for her seven great grandchildren:  Jay and Brennan Edwards, and Nicholas, Addison, Reicher, Colton, and Quincey Hooten, and nieces and nephews Jann, Gary, Chris, Andy and Joel.    She will be greatly missed by her friends, loving family and numerous Earp and McBeth cousins.   Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, the Lampasas County Livestock Association or scholarship fund of your choice. Visitation is Saturday April 13, 2019 from 2-3 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel, funeral is at 3 pm. Burial is Sunday April 14, 2019 at 3 pm at Shannon Rosehill Memorial Park in Ft. Worth, TX.
