Michael R.L. Coon, 48, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Copperas Cove. A Memorial Gathering will be from 6-8 PM on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Scott's Funeral Home of Copperas Cove.
Michael was born on June 5, 1966 in Thailand to Larry and Sandy Coon. He grew up in Kansas, Germany and Texas while his father was serving in the United States Army. Michael graduated from Copperas Cove High School in 1984 and was a member of the National Honor Society. He believed in education and went on to get his Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and his Master's in Applied Optics from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta. Later he earned a Master's in Mathematics from SMU Dallas and pursued his PHD in Applied Mathematics at Baylor University before returning to Copperas Cove. After returning home, Michael was a tutor at Central Texas College and was a math teacher for the University of Phoenix in Killeen. Michael was an avid reader. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Coon.
Michael is survived by his mother, Sandy Tonphanich; brothers, Ronald Coon, Jonathon Coon; step-mother, Rebecca Coon; nephew, Nichols Coon and a niece, KateLynn Coon.
