Mattie Maxine Rikard, 90, died July 23, 2019 while at her residence at Eden Hill Communities in New Braunfels. Born in Hearne to Dora Belle (Karr) and Samuel Ernest Fulton on July 2, 1929, she joined older siblings Ernestine and Bill and later welcomed younger sister Etta Belle. She grew up on a rural livestock farm. While in high school she led the band as a drum majorette and was on staff for both the school newspaper and yearbook. She graduated from Hearne High School just before her 16th birthday and in the same 1945 class as her fellow cheerleader and high school sweetheart, Donald A. Rikard. As soon as he completed his two years in the U.S. Army, Maxine and Don married on June 18, 1947 and for the next few years made Hearne their home. Maxine worked while her husband pursued his degree at Texas A&M University, then 1950 found them moving to Lake Jackson. During their 28 years there they grew their family with the adoption of Robert Allen, then Lisa Ann and finally with the birth of Mark Andrew. She enjoyed her horses and trail rides, spending time with a very tightly knit group of friends nicknamed “The Mouthers,” crossword puzzles, “42” and became an avid golfer. Don’s advancement at Dow Chemical moved them to Michigan, where they lived for 10 years. Then, as her husband began paving the way to full retirement, they moved back to Texas to make memories with grandchildren at their Lakeway home on Lake Travis until they relocated to Lampasas in 1998. For the next 19 years Maxine made this her home and her community. And it was in Lampasas where, after 65 years of marriage, she was widowed in 2012. She made the decision to move to New Braunfels in 2017, where she remained until her passing. Maxine was preceded in death by her siblings and her husband. Survivors include her children, Bob Rikard (Cynthia) of Fairfield, Lisa Rikard Roll (Mark) of Boerne, and Mark Rikard (Terri) of New Braunfels; grandchildren Ben Rikard (fiancée Tracy), Bryan Hall (fiancée Hanna), Lauren Roll Lordman (Tony), Andrew Rikard, Jon Rikard, Russell Hall (fiancée Tara), Katherine Roll Vorontsov (Tolya), Nathan Rikard, Caroline Roll, Taylour Rikard, Nikki Rikard and Zachery Rikard; and great-grandchildren Jaeda, Evan, Kaileigh, Julie, Kinsleigh, Grant, Tony Jr. and Zoia. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Sherry Campbell, Donna Harrison and Patti Lindsey, to whom she was known as Auntie Max. The memorial service will be at First United Methodist Church of Lampasas on Aug. 3 at 4 p.m. Donations may be made to a local charity: Vision Lampasas , First United Methodist Church, The Library Foundation of Lampasas, Texas or Lampasas County Museum Foundation.
