Mary Virginia Locklear

August 17, 1926 — June 13, 2019

Mary Virginia Kirkpatrick Locklear was born in Burnet County on August 17, 1926. She was the third of three daughters born to Dora and John Kirkpatrick. Her education began in a one-room schoolhouse and was completed at Briggs High School, graduating in 1943. In 1947, she married James Worth Locklear, a World War II pilot, who had returned to Lampasas after serving in the South Pacific. Their daughter, Brenda was born in 1953. They made Houston their home and lived there 30 happy years. Virginia was active in many church activities, enjoyed playing in a couple of bridge clubs, volunteered at a local hospital gift shop, and was a frequent patron at the Houston Junior League Tea Room. Virginia and James enjoyed traveling and they visited four continents together. In 1989, she received the Yellow Rose of Texas Award from Governor Bill Clements.   She is preceded in death by her husband, James Worth Locklear, her parents, and sisters; Dorris Earnest and Dawn Morris.    She is survived by daughter, Brenda Piccirilli (Dante) of Kempner, two grandsons, Jason Smith (Meghan) of Hutto and Blake Smith (Abby) of Liberty Hill, a granddaughter, Ginny Ackerman (Chad) of Kerrville and great-grandchildren, Makenzey, Maxton, Mason Smith.   The family will receive visitors Sunday June 16, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at Watson Cemetery Monday June 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.   In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Watson Cemetery Association.
