Marvin Landis Powell, 83, passed away on March 18, 2022 in Austin, Texas. He was born June 30, 1938, in Fredonia, Texas, near Mason to Marvin Bea and Verna Powell (nee Nixon), who preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held at Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel on Friday, March 25, 2022, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 1 pm.
He grew up in Copperas Cove, Texas, where he played high school football. He played on the last 6-man team and later on the first 11-man team for Copperas Cove High School. After graduation, he attended barber college in Austin. He barbered in the surrounding area of Copperas Cove before moving to Big Spring. He also served in the Army National Guard in the Lampasas area, and later in Big Spring. In 1961 he was mobilized into the US Army due to the global troubles that were present in Europe and Asia. During this time was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He was honorably discharged in 1962.
After his discharge from the Army, he went back to barbering in Big Spring and later in Austin. In 1969 he began working for the State of Texas in the departments of Treasury, Highway, and later Human Resources. After he retired from the State in about 1994, he went back to barbering.
He married Charlotte Ann Spivey on October 1, 1961, in the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church near Lampasas. To this union, they had three children. They made their home in Austin.
He was a member of Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
He was also preceded in death by father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lewis and Mearl Spivey; brother-in-law, Glen Spivey; sister-in-law, Linda Crawford; and great-nephew, Casey Crawford.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Charlotte Powell, of Austin; two sons: Gaylon Powell (Kristie) and Kevin Powell (Olivia) of Jarrell; daughter: Tammy Powell of Austin; grandson: Garrett Powell of Jarrell; brother: Glynn Powell (Dorothy) of Copperas Cove; brother-in-law: Bruce Crawford of Lampasas; three nephews: Jeff Spivey of Fort Worth, Blake Powell (Maggie) of Austin, and Randy Crawford (Dee Ann Crawford) of Kempner; three nieces: Karen Harrison (Ray), Misty Smith (Hollis), and Ashley Reza (John); uncle: Norman Powell (Norma Lee) of Arp, Texas; and aunt: Ida Mae Parks of Arp, Texas.
Interment will be in the Watson Cemetery located in the Watson Community, about 15 miles south of Lampasas, Texas.
