James Luther Gibson, a man of many stories and a life well-lived, was born on September 20, 1936, in Dahlonega, Georgia. He passed away peacefully on November 17 2024, in Kempner, Texas, with Dustin and his beloved little companion, Gabby, by his side.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, January 10, 2025, at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Jim’s life was a tapestry of rich experiences woven together by his adventurous spirit and unwavering commitment to serving others. From an early age he embarked on a journey that would take him from the rugged hills of Georgia, where he ran moonshine for his uncles, to serving proudly for over 20 years in the U.S. Army. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel, he was a member of the Special Forces and selflessly served two tours in Vietnam. His dedication and courage earned him numerous accolades, including the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm.
Jim’s education was a testament to his determination and drive, culminating in a Master's Degree that highlighted his pursuit of knowledge. Yet, it was his zest for life that truly defined him. He was known for his infectious laughter, his ability to brighten a room with a joke, and his caring nature, always ready to lend a helping hand.
He cherished his memories, often sharing tales of his escapades in Vietnam, camping trips, and moments spent at the lake with his best friend David Rogerson and his family; these were recurrent themes in the stories he loved to recount. His adventurous spirit led him to zipline the longest zipline in the United States in Ruidoso, New Mexico. He traveled to iconic destinations, including Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry, and had unforgettable experiences in New Orleans and Vicksburg, Mississippi. In his later years, Jim embraced life even more fervently, making every moment count alongside those he adored.
Among his hobbies, Jim found joy in working on cars, skiing, golfing, playing pool and boating. A true lover of country music, he spent many afternoons with friends and family, tapping into the energy of the songs that resonated with his soul.
Jim leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Setsuko (Michi) Gibson, as well as his father Leonard William Gibson, mother Myrtle Butler Gibson, and brother John Gibson. He is survived by his cherished adopted family, including Dustin Wilhite and partner Nick, Mandy Olmstead and husband Brian, as well as long-time friend Yong Gates and many others whose lives were touched by his kindness.
James Luther Gibson's spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His journey was not just marked by the miles traveled but by the love shared and the memories made along the way. He lived fully, bravely, and benevolently—qualities that will resonate long into the future.
I would like to thank everyone at Scott and White Hospital who has helped me with Jim and keeping him strong and healthy, his health care providers, Dr. Paul Gerdes, Jamie Johnson-Varnado and Sylvia Sherman and the other many Dr's we have seen in the past. We appreciate all that you have done for us. - Dustin
