Gary Alan Martin

May 26, 1936 — October 24, 2021

Gary Martin passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 24, 2021.

Graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at 1 pm.

Gary was born in Marble Falls, Texas on May 26, 1936, to Delbert James Martin and Stella Eloise Alderson Martin and moved to Lampasas in 1942.  He lived in Lampasas most of his life and graduated from Lampasas High School in 1954.  He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 through 1959.  He managed Wyatt's cafeterias in Dallas and San Antonio before returning to Lampasas in 1965 to help manage his family's restaurant, Martin's Restaurant.  Gary married Bennie Jane Lang on February 14, 1959, in Lampasas, Texas.  They owned and operated Martin's restaurant for 40 years until 2005.  Gary loved visiting with his customers.  Since the sale of the restaurant, he was often the first customer daily at the Country Kitchen.

Gary is survived by his 3 daughters, Laurie Henderson (Greg), Janna Hammett (Richard), and Julie Bucek (Mark); 5 grandchildren, Matthew (Danielle), Macy, Cara Beth (Ryan), Ben (Makayla), and Molly (Taylor); 2 great-grandchildren, Dawson and Madeline; brother-in-law, Roland Lang (Wanda) and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.  Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Bennie of 61 years; his parents; grandson, Sam Henderson; sister, Jan Leaman; brother-in-law, Don Leaman, and many family members and friends.

Gary and Bennie took their girls on many fun vacations with friends and their families.  They traveled with friends to Colorado, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Las Vegas often.  They spent many years with friends on opening deer season weekend in Sipe Springs, Texas.  Some of their best memories were made on all of these trips.  Bennie and Gary played bridge weekly from 1970 and monthly with their bridge group until just a few years ago.  He enjoyed going to the ranch, riding around at the ranch with his grandkids, working with his tractor, going on hunting trips, playing dominoes and cards with friends and family.  Gary took pride that he and Bennie taught their daughters their same hard work ethic.

Gary was one of the founding members of the Lampasas Spring Ho Festival in 1972 and served on the committees for 7 years.  He continued to be a supporter of the Spring Ho Festival and the community of Lampasas.  Gary was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Lampasas, the Highland Lakes Tourism Committee, served on the Lampasas City Council, member of and President of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a charitable man who enjoyed doing things for others.

Gary was full of life, loved telling stories, enjoyed entertaining whether by hunting, cooking, having fish fries, and of course, spending time with and bragging on his grandchildren.

A special thanks to Family Medicine Clinic, New Century Hospice, and LPD.  Words cannot express the comfort you gave us.

Memorials can be made to the church or the charity of your choice in Gary's name.
