James Gordon “Jim” Webb, 93, of Kempner, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 1, 2021. Following his wishes, there will not be a service. In his words, he only wanted us to “blow the bugle and stomp the dirt.”

He was born in Lake Placido, Texas on October 28, 1927. He grew up in Victoria, Texas. During his youth he was a hardworking cowboy who did everything from breaking horses, rounding up cattle, and hauling loads of sand with his wagon to help his family make ends meet during the depression era. He enlisted in the United States Army in February of 1946. He served his country proudly for over 20 years until he retired in 1967. He served many tours overseas that included Germany, Austria, Japan, and Korea. He received many medals, badges, and commendations, but was not a man to brag about them. But note… he did make the center page in Time Life magazine in a November edition in 1963.

After his retirement, he worked for 40 years at Cove Ford as a car salesman. He was also a lifetime member of the Cove Trail Riders Club. He loved trail rides, camping, and volunteering as an auctioneer for charity and fundraising events. He was a lifelong rancher who raised horses, goats, donkeys, llamas and loved his dogs. He loved watching RFDTV, the farm commodity report, and the Big Joe Polka Show.

He was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Killeen for over 30 years.

Jim was a man of great character and integrity. He had a memory like an elephant and always had the best stories to tell. He was a giving individual, a great humanitarian, and always helped anyone that needed it. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carruth Webb; parents, John and Myrtle Webb; his brother, Sonny; sister-in-law, Lu Webb; and sister, Helen Nance.

Jim is survived by his girls, Anna and Nanette; grandsons, Kyle and Dustin; 6 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his best friend of over 50 years, Carl Taylor. In Jim’s words, “he was more like a brother to me than a friend.”

We would like to extend a great thank you to Bob and Ellen Falkenstein for many years of being, “absolutely the best neighbors a man could have.” Jim’s words again.

We would also like the thank the staff, doctors, nurses, and all caregivers from the Advent Health Central Texas Hospital, Hill Country Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, and Amedisys Hospice Care for all of the dedication and support Jim received. We appreciate each and every one of you and all that you have done.

Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure.

In lieu of flowers, that would only get all of our allergies in a tizzy, Jim would hope you would do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in need.
