Bobbye Alexander Behlau

October 23, 1929 — December 17, 2017

Bobbye Alexander Behlau of Lampasas was born on October 23, 1929 in Lampasas, Texas. Both her maternal (the Davises) and paternal (the Alexanders) ancestors settled in Burnet County in the 1800s. She was the daughter of Robert and Althea Davis Alexander.   Mrs. Behlau attended Lampasas public schools, graduating in 1946. She also graduated from Abilene Christian College in 1950. At Incarnate Word College, the University of Texas at San Antonio and Our Lady of the Lake University, she obtained a Master’s degree and additional graduate hours.   She married Joe W.G. Behlau, an Air Force officer and later a golf professional, on April 25, 1952. One son, Robert Alexander Behlau, was born in 1956. The family lived in San Antonio except during the time Lt. Col. Behlau served in the Air Force. In 2005, they moved to Lampasas.   Mrs. Behlau was an elementary school teacher for 20 years, a reading specialist for 9, and principal of Timberwilde Elementary School for 9 years. Most of her years as an educator were spent in Northside School District in San Antonio. After she retired, she wrote the history of Northside ISD; wrote IN TOUCH, a newsletter for the retirees of the district; and co-founded the NISD School Museum. In October of 2010, Northside ISD named a school in her honor.   She retired in 1989. Since then she has edited the Northern Hills Homeowners’ Newsletter and has also taught adults and children to read in North East ISD’s Community Education Program and in her home. In addition, she served as president of Northern Hills Homeowners Association from 1993-1997 and was awarded the Hidalgo Award, the highest honor that Bexar County can give to a resident for community service.   She also worked as a supervisor of student teachers at Southwest Texas State University from 1992-1998.   Active at Reconciliation Episcopal Church in San Antonio, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and she and her husband served as ushers.   While living in San Antonio, in 1992 she was one of the organizers of the Lampasas Club of San Antonio. The club has met twice a year since that date.   In Lampasas, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church she has taught Sunday School and has been a Bible class leader.   Also, she has written a monthly column called Remarkable Lampasans for the Lampasas Dispatch Record. In 2010, the columns were published in book form and called “Remarkable Lampasans and More.” There were three stories at the end of the book about her own childhood growing up in Lampasas.   Since Bobby Behlau Elementary was dedicated in October 2010, she has made monthly visits to the school to read and write for the students. In the fall of 2011, she presented the school with a book, “The Pillars of Bobbye Behlau Elementary,” that she and her granddaughter wrote about exemplary students. She also presented the school with “Who Are You Grandpa?”, “Lana Is Momma” and “Two Jobs for Lana,” books she wrote for her grandchildren.   She is survived by her husband Joe W.G. Behlau of Lampasas; her son Robert Behlau of Aquilla; grandchildren, Lana Hunt of Mansfield and Payton Behlau of West. Other survivors are her sister-in-law, Anne Alexander McLean of Lampasas; a niece, Jill Savoni and husband, Clint, and their son, Rhett, and daughter Sloane of Hereford. Also, by cousins Beth Moten and family of Austin, Texas, and Matthew Moten and family of Austin, Texas.   Her mother, father and brother, Donald D. Alexander, predeceased her, as did a beloved aunt, Lois Moten.   Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Susie Comer and Deacon Millie Williams officiating. Burial will be at the Davis Cemetery near Briggs.   For those desiring to make memorial gifts, the family suggests contributions be made to Bobbye Behlau Elementary School Library at 2355 Camp Light Way, San Antonio, TX 87245 or to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Box 29, Lampasas, TX 76550.
