Betty Jane Thomas, age 87, of Copperas Cove, Texas passed away at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, Texas on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

Betty was born on August 28, 1931, to Henry and Gladys Babcock Elwyn in North Norwich, New York. Betty grew up and resided in the state of New York and in Canada until moving to Texas in 1991.

Betty was a dedicated and hard worker. Betty worked for American Thermostat in South Cairo, New York, for many years. Betty was a loving nanny and foster parent to multiple children. Betty especially loved being a grandmother and asked everyone she met to call her, “Grandma Betty”.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Judith Smith; brothers, Henry Elwyn, Charles Elwyn and Bob Elwyn; sister, Mildred Wolfe; and nephews, Charles and John Tice.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Mary Lou Porter and husband Charles Kingsley, Nancy Slutzky-Smith of Hunter, New York; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister, Doris Bailey.

Betty will always be remembered for her deep love for family and longtime friends. Betty was a feisty woman with a wonderful sense of humor. Betty was always known for wearing colorful hats with intricate brooches. Betty has a love for animals (especially household dogs), old music, gardening and being in nature. Betty took the time every year to ensure everyone had a bucket of her homemade baked cookies for Christmas. Betty will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
