Bennie Jo Taylor, 82, of Copperas Cove passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in Killeen. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 20,2013, at 12:30 PM at Scott's Funeral Home Chapel with Elvis Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. Visitation will be from 3-5 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.
Bennie Jo was born on May 9, 1931, in Mangum, OK to the late Joseph and Myrl Hartwell Akers. She graduated from Mangum High School. Bennie Jo attended Lispcomb University in Nashville, TN where she received her BA in Education and she later got her Masters at Southwestern Oklahoma University in Weatherford, OK. She married Carl Taylor on December 22, 1955, in Oklahoma while he was serving in the United States Army. Together they traveled the world during his career. They settled in Copperas Cove where she taught from 1965 until 1993. Bennie Jo was a member of the Broad Street Church of Christ in Lampasas. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jimmy Carroll Akers.
Bennie Jo is survived by her husband of 57 years, Carl Taylor; daughters, LaDonna Whitehead, Katherine Bennett; grandchildren, Melissa Jo Knapp, Jessica Whitehead, Taylor Bennett, Joseph Bennett and great grandson, Landon Knapp.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
