Funeral services for Alice Marie Largent Gillen will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel, and visitation will be Friday at 6 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on April 3, 2018. Marie was born to Althea Kinney Largent and Harvey Largent in Pawcatuck, Connecticut on March 30, 1920. She came to Lampasas at a young age to and live with her grandmother, Mary Harvey Largent, after her mother passed away. She graduated from Lampasas High School. She married C. J. (Choc) Gillen on January 31, 1939. Marie and her late husband, “Choc” Gillen, were long time members of the business community in Lampasas as owners of Gillen’s Army Surplus Store. In addition to caring for her home and family and attending to business activities, Marie served as a Girl Scout leader and as PTA president. She was an active member of the Lampasas Garden Club and she earned certification as a National Flower Show Judge. Marie played golf and was a member of the Lampasas Women’s Golf Association. She was an avid reader and gardener. She also loved to travel and especially enjoyed trips to Israel, Europe, and Hawaii. In her later years, she enjoyed being a member of the Lovely Lasses of Lampasas Chapter of the Red Hat Society. Marie was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for many years and served as a youth leader, in women’s auxiliary, deacon and elder. Some of Marie’s fondest memories are of growing up in Lampasas and attending Sunday School and church with her grandmother, Mary Largent. She once wrote “I realize, seeing the discord in the lives of many of today’s children, what a blessing it was to have been raised by one whose faith never wavered, at least to my knowledge. Each time I attended Sunday School and church, it was a renewal of faith and belief in God which started a long time ago.” Marie was predeceased by her husband, Choc Gillen, and by her brother Harvey W. Largent. She is survived by daughters Alicia Waggoner and husband, David, of Dallas, Anita Wheeler of Dahlonega, GA, and Sherry Gillen-Milligan and husband, Garry Milligan, of Lampasas.
