Master Sergeant Albert E. Smith, USA, Retired, age 70, of Copperas Cove passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 in Palm Desert, California. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 24, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove with Father Chris Downey officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at 1:00 P.M. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 23 from 6 to 8 pm at Scott's Funeral Home.
Albert was born on September 11, 1943 in Paterson, N.J. to the late Albert E. and Grace Ammacher Smith. Albert joined the United States Army in 1960. He served for 20 years during the Vietnam Conflict earning two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Star medals with "V" Device and Oak Leaf Clusters, three Silver Stars, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star and several other awards. After his retirement from the military, Albert became a Correctional Officer for the State of Texas and retired after 18 years of service. He married Marlene Mathes on September 21, 1963 in Paterson, N.J. Albert was active in the local DAV, American Legion, VFW and the Purple Heart Centex Chapter. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Nelford W. Smith.
Albert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marlene Smith of Copperas Cove; daughter, Tracey Miller and fiancé, Will Derowitsch of Killeen; and son, Todd Smith and fiancé, Melissa Noland of Palm Desert, CA.
