A. G. Cummings

Services for Gerald “A.G” Cummings, 84, of Izoro will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 5 at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas.   Mr. Cummings died on Saturday, September 21, 2019 in Gatesville, Texas surrounded by loved ones. He was born on June 26, 1935 in Turnover, TX to Mary Carothers Cummings and Alvis William Cummings.     Mr. Cummings grew up in Bee House where he was strongly influenced by his mother, Mary Caddel and his grandfather, Willie Carothers. He graduated from Evant High School in 1953 and joined the Bee House Masonic Lodge #550 in 1958. Although Mr. Cummings did not receive any formal higher education, he was very fond of telling people that he received a PhD from Evant High School, “Post Hole Digger” that is. His children would go on to make up for this lack of higher education through his support and encouragement. One of his greatest prides was his children and grandchildren’s degrees from Central Texas College, Baylor University, The University of Houston, Texas A&M University, Hardin-Simmons University, Texas State University, and The University of Texas.     Mr. Cummings would go on to have a storied career. He began by pouring concrete using a wheelbarrow and eventually started his own construction company and Cummings Lumber in Copperas Cove with his brother Jim.   Soon he would be a respected land developer, rancher, and banker. At one point Mr. Cummings had ownership in two banks and a Savings and Loan. His true passion, however, was ranching. He continued farming and ranching long after he left the banking industry and passed his love for the Hill Country down to all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.   Mr. Cummings was a prime example of an extrovert. He never met a stranger his entire life and could “talk to a fence post.” A lifelong Democrat, he liked to talk about current events, politics, the cattle market, and horse racing. Mr. Cummings had a saying for everything; sometimes colorful, sometimes wise, sometimes things that could not be said in mixed company. He will be greatly missed.   He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Mary and Claude Caddel, his sister Virginia Cummings, and his father Alvis William Cummings. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Karen; brother, Jim Cummings and wife Felicia; daughter, Vicki Cantrell and husband Kenney; daughter, Marilyn Cummings; daughter, Laurie Zimmerman and husband Mark; daughter, Traci Barnard and husband Cliff; daughter, Shelly Spivey; daughter, Geri Gowan and husband Clay; son, William Cummings and partner Adam Conrad; 14 grandchildren and 9, soon to be 10, great-grandchildren.   Special friends include Dick Schieffer, Melissa Calhoun and family, Troy Deriso, and Donald Parrish and family, friend Felix Ramirez.   Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 4th at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to: Scholarship Fund Bee House Masonic Lodge #550 550 Live Oak Street Evant, Texas 76525
