Juverna Bogard

May 25, 1927 — April 18, 2017

Loyce Juverna Bogard died April 18, 2017, at the Lampasas Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lampasas, Texas. Juverna was born May 25, 1927, to Loye and Allene Barker in the Live Oak Community of San Saba, Texas. Her parents farmed “on the thirds and fourths”, and ultimately saved enough to buy a farm when she was in high school. Her family attended a small country church with visiting clergy from different Christian denominations when Juverna was a child. They attended summer revival meetings in San Saba, which were often held on the church lawn. This early experience led to her baptism at age 12 and an abiding faith for the rest of her life. She later attended the First Baptist Church in San Saba and then the First Baptist Church of Lampasas, where she has been a member since 1958. She married John F. Bogard in San Saba on October 26, 1944, when she was 17 – a year after she graduated from San Saba High School. John was a news reporter for the San Saba News, and they also raised laying hens and sold hatching eggs for extra income. Sons James S. and John C. Bogard were born on their little farm a mile east of San Saba in 1948 and 1951, respectively. Juverna moved with husband and sons to Lampasas in 1958, where John had begun teaching in the Lampasas Independent School District. She worked in a local drug store and as a waitress, then obtained her beautician’s license in 1960. She owned and operated Juverna’s Style Center Beauty Shop in Lampasas from 1960-1987, retiring in 1991. She began painting after retirement, focusing mainly on central Texas landscapes using oils on canvas. She was a member of Lampasas Art Club and served twice as President of Buchanan Arts and Crafts, Inc. Juverna was an excellent cook, and her bread and pastries were legendary. She contributed recipes to two Buchanan Arts and Crafts cookbooks: Hodge Podge and Hodge Podge II. Juverna was preceded in death by her parents, Loye Adolph Barker and Allene Gertrude (Rawls) Barker; by her sister Nelda Jean (Barker) Sulser and brother Larry A. Barker; and by her husband John. She is survived by her two sons, John (Teresa) and James (Rhonda); granddaughters Rachel Fennell and Adrian Lee (Mike); grandsons Derek Bogard (Kimberley), Glynn Bogard (Elizabeth) and Nigel Lay; great-grandchildren Ian Fennell, Reese Fennell, Claire Lee, Jack Lee, Trevor Bogard (Brittany) and Maggie Bogard; and by great-great-grandson Carter Bogard. A memorial service for Loyce Juverna Bogard will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas. Interment of ashes after the memorial service will be at the High Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Bend, Texas. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lampasas, 402 S Key Ave, Lampasas, Texas 76550 (512-556-3673); High Valley Cemetery Association, PO Box 163, Bend, Texas 76824; American Cancer Society, P.O.
