Lother Albert Matthys, 97, went home to his Lord early Sunday morning, September 4th. Born February 20, 1919 to Helena and Otto Matthys, Jr., Lother lived his younger years on a cotton farm.
A World War II veteran, Lother joined the United States Army Air Force (320th Bomb Group) in 1942 and served in England, North Africa, Sardinia, France and Germany. Following this, he attended Business College and was an accountant for Standard Concrete for 10 years before joining the US Postal Service. In 1980, he retired after 26 years of faithful service.
Lother married Gladys Garrett in 1951. They were blessed with two children: Tim and Terri. Lifelong Lutherans, they gladly shared their time, talents and treasures to help others come to know their Savior, especially through Lutheran education. They lived in Houston until retirement from the USPS, at which time they relocated to Lampasas to live near son Tim (a Copperas Cove general dentist).
Gladys went to heaven in 1997. In 2002 Lother married her widowed sister, Marjorie Garrett Nail who passed away in 2007. Lother continued to live at home for the next several years with help from dear neighbors, especially Mike and Theresa Lock of Lampasas. He then lived out his later years at Silver Creek Assisted Living in Lampasas and Stoney Brook Assisted Living in Copperas Cove.
Lother was preceded in death by his father, Otto Matthys, Jr, stepfather Arnold Matthys, and mother Helena of Wharton, brother Herman and sister Helen of Houston, and son Tim of Copperas Cove.
Survivors include sisters Alma Matthys of Wharton, Irene Matthys of Houston, brother Richard (wife Loveta) of Lawton, Oklahoma, daughter Terri and son-in-law Jeff Fisher of Jackson, Mississippi, daughter-in-law Naomi Matthys of Copperas Cove, 4 grandchildren: Sarah Fisher Stewart (husband Rusty) of Madison, Alabama and Anna Fisher Smith of Niles, Ohio, Hillary Matthys Walker (husband Dan) of Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and Joshua Matthys (wife Heather) of Austin, 4 great grandchildren: Shauna and Shylah Stewart of Madison, Alabama and James and Mikey Walker of Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. (An additional great grandson to be born in Austin in November).
Visitation will be Thursday, September 8th at Sneed Funeral Chapel from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to. Celebration of Life service to be held Friday, September 9th at Faith Lutheran Church in Lampasas at 11:00 a.m., with internment at Oak Hill Cemetery.
