Alton Garner, age 106, died Sunday June 5, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born April 24, 1910 on a farm near Rumley in Lampasas County. He was the eldest of four children born to Walter and Stella (Duke) Garner. Alton attended first grade at Clayton School and between 1918 and 1927 he joined other children to walk across pastures from every direction to attend Clayrock School. He graduated from Lampasas High School in 1929. Alton followed in his Dad’s footsteps and became a third generation Lampasas River Valley farmer. He farmed in his early 20’s and then acquired enough land to begin ranching. He loved the land and the cattle that grazed it. During World War II, Alton served in the U.S. Army as part of the Third Armored Division for 42 months in North Africa and Italy.
On May 28, 1948 he married Alma Baxter. She preceded him in death May 25, 2005.
Alton was a longtime member of Kempner United Methodist Church, where he served as song leader and sang in the choir. He was fiercely independent and hard working. He will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his kind and gentle spirit, and his incredibly sharp mind and quick wit, even at age 106.
