Sergeant First Class (RET) Frederick Slape struck fear, inspired love, and commanded respect in the hearts of the soldiers he led during his 20 year career in the US Army. Standing an intimidating 6 feet 4 inches, few dared to question his authority—even those of higher rank who dared cross him on matters of true importance.
As the non-commissioned officer in charge of vehicle maintenance, he felt responsible not only for those soldiers under his leadership, but for everyone in his battalion. He knew their lives depended on their vehicles performing flawlessly so he worked tirelessly to maintain them to the highest standard. As his comrades rolled outside the wire, he covered them with unspoken prayers.
In childhood, Fred made his parents’ lives quite “interesting.” He was a good kid, though, even if he was always up to some sneaky shenanigans. His own children—whom he loved with all of his humongous heart—gave him a run for his money as they made their own mischief. Fred’s approach to fatherhood was similar to his Army leadership—he raised his children using stern discipline and unending love. He was strict when necessary, but really he was just a big old teddy bear.
In 1998, Fred met Diane, his Forever Love. Married in 1999, their love only grew during years of deployments, international moves, retirement, and untold major life changes. As a couple, they were stalwart supporters of his soldiers and their families. Their couch was always open for folks who were hurting and needed a soft place to land. Many of Fred’s last words were spent telling Diane that he loved her. Until his final breath, her presence brought him comfort. Their love story is one for the ages, even if they met online.
On October 22, 2015, Fred passed from this life far too soon for the legions of people who love him. He was surrounded by family members who ushered him peacefully through the veil. He was greeted on the other side by friends, family, and comrades who passed before him. His was a life well-lived; he had “no regrats.”
Frederick Slape is survived by his wife, Diane; his children, Rob Slape, Zach Slape, and Montana Jacobson; his father, Stephen G. Slape, Sr.; his mother, Mary Ellen Brown; his siblings, Susan Buss, Laura Hovermale, and Stephen G. Slape, Jr.; and a host of military family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers from all over the world.
