Robert “Bob” Dyer, 87, of Lometa, Texas, passed away peacefully of natural causes in Houston, Texas on Monday with his wife of fifty-six years, Vardi “Bobbie” Dyer, and his daughter, Adele James at his side. He was born near Gatesville, Texas as the youngest of six children. His parents moved the family to Lometa, Texas where Bob graduated in 1947 and then earned a BS Degree in Industrial Arts and Education from North Texas State University.
He flew in the Air Force in 1951 and was assigned to missions in Korea and Vietnam where he 183 combat missions in a B-57. Among his many honors, he was awarded an Air Medal 12 times. His last duty assignment was to the B-57 airplanes from Tampa, Florida to Topeka, Kansas to turn them over to the National Guard.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1973 ranked as a Lieutenant Colonel, Robert moved his family from Tampa, Florida back to Lometa, Texas where he began teaching Industrial Arts at Lampasas High School and full-time ranching.
During the forty years he lived in Lometa, he served as a Lometa School Board member, as member and President of the Lion’s Club, built the trophy cases and helped in various other ways as a parent of four for Lometa ISD. In addition, he was a contributing parishioner and leader at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. He loved working on the ranch, having coffee with his friends at the Lometa coffee shops, and giving his time generously to the community. He was loved as a brother, uncle, husband, father, and grandfather.
He leaves behind his wife Vardi Dyer, and his four children: Theresa Dyer, Robert Dyer, Adele Dyer James, and Martha Dyer. He has four grandchildren: Michael James, Helen James, John Michael Gould, and Claire Gould.
Relatives and community members are invited to honor his good and long life on Saturday October 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Lometa, Texas. A rosary will be recited Friday, October 9, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. Mr. Dyer will be buried at Lometa City Cemetery.
