Marion Katherine Kuhlmann Hammett, 84, of Lampasas, died Wednesday August 19, 2015 at her home in Lampasas. A retired teacher, Mrs. Hammett taught for 44 years, 28 of those in the Lampasas Independent School District. Mrs. Hammett was born July 29, 1931 in Fredericksburg, Texas to Elgin and Erna Kuhlmann. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Fredericksburg in 1950 and received her teaching degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. She began coaching basketball in George West, Texas where she met William Lee (Bill) Hammett of Lampasas. They were married on June 22, 1957 in Fredericksburg. While at George West, her teams made the state tournament three consecutive years and in 1957 she was the first woman to be selected to coach the Girls High School All-Star game. Mrs. Hammett moved to Lampasas in 1971 where she taught fifth grade and Bill became primary school principal. In addition to teaching, she was involved in numerous community organizations including the Lampasas Retired Teachers, 36 Club, Red Hatters, and was a past president of the Pierian Club. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill. She is survived by her son, Craig and wife, Kerry of Lampasas, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation for Mrs. Hammett will be Friday, August 21, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday August 22, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
