Gladys Estell Sims Bain, age 92, passed away on February 20, 2015 in the Cibolo Creek Rehabilitation Center in Boerne, Texas near San Antonio. She was born to Leona and Edward E. Sims, Sr. on June 22, 1922 in Lampasas County and she lived there most of her life. She married Hansford Bain on June 18, 1939 in the Presbyterian Mance in Adamsville, Texas. Gladys has been a member of that church since 1932.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother Edward Sims, Jr., sisters Morean Beavers, Joyce Green, Marguerite Smith, Geneva Thompson, and an infant sister. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara (Bobbye) and Andy Cline of San Antonio, TX, grandson Dustin Geren of New Braunfels, TX, granddaughter and grand son-in-law, Brooke and Jeff McNabb of Houston, TX, brother Jack Sims and wife Rosemary of Temple, TX, sister-in-law Virginia Sims of Elgin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gladys was a graduate of Lampasas High School and Jackson Business College. She was a book keeper at Piggly Wiggy for Mr. Blair and Paul’s Electric (Paul Brown) for 42 years. She loved sports and was a basketball player under the late Coach Sam Fowler. While her daughter was in Lampasas High School, she never missed one of her basketball games. She enjoyed golf and bowling and traveled to many bowling tournaments with her friends. As she became less active, she never gave up support of the Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys.
She was also a wonderful seamstress, having stayed up many long nights making outfits for her daughter. She grew up in the radio generation and loved the Grand Ole Opry and dreamed of going there. Her dream came true on her 80th birthday when her daughter and son-in-law surprised her with a trip there. Her other dream was that her daughter would have the opportunity to have the education that she never had, and it would be great if it just happened to be at UT Austin. Her daughter appreciates all the hard work it took to do this for her.
She loved her grandchildren and she was a special part of their lives. They spent many summers and weekends at the Bain Ranch north of Lampasas where Gladys and Hansford lived before building their house in town.
She will be greatly missed by all of those who love her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Townsen Cemetery Association.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bain will be held Saturday March 7, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Townsen Cemetery.
