JC Ewing

JC Ewing Jr., 78, a long-time resident of Lampasas, Texas succumbed to a months-long battle with lung cancer on Sunday, August, 10, 2014. A week shy of reaching his 79th birthday. JC’s departure closed the final chapter of a life which was full of loving family, friends, and loyal clients. His passing ended a life-long fascination with tax preparation, financial planning and numerical puzzles. JC was born on August 17, 1935 in Tyler, Texas to JC Ewing Sr. and Regina Seaberry Ewing, both of whom preceded him in death. He spent most of his youth in Waco, Texas with his parents, his brother Ben James Ewing, who preceded him in death, and his sister Barbara Ann Ewing Johnson, who survives him. On May 25, 1968, JC Married Johnnie Lou Lanier. At that time, they were both residents of San Saba, Texas where JC had already established a small accounting firm and Johnnie was a schoolteacher. With the marriage came three children, Melissa Katherine Rollins Foil, Cynthia Lou Sloan, and Marcus Alan Sloan. They resided in San Saba for a year and a half before JC took a job with an accounting firm in Houston, Texas. While in Houston, the family grew by one when another daughter, Jennifer Lee Ewing was born in January 1970. JC is survived by his wife and his four children. Later in 1970, JC and the family moved to Lampasas to join the legal firm of J.V. Hammett as a Certified Public Accountant. Shortly after moving to Lampasas he established his own firm again, and over the course of his 45 years as a CPA in Lampasas his business grew and changed. In the mid-70’s, his wife, Johnnie Ewing, joined the accounting practice and remained working there until its closure earlier this year. The practice has been housed at 105 South Key for several years. In 1978, JC was appointed as the first county auditor of Lampasas County by Judge C.W. Duncan. In 1989 he also became affiliated with H.D. Vest Investment Services with which he held a Series 6, 7, and 63 and an Insurance License. Three grandchildren, all children of Melissa Katherine Rollins Foil, were added to the family: Benjamin Alan Rollins, Jenny Elizabeth Rollins McBee and Thomas Andrew Rollins. In 2013 JC was blessed with seeing the first of his great-grandchildren, Ruby Ella McBee born. He is survived by all three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by David Foil, husband of Melissa Katherine, Kelsey Vann Rollins, wife of Thomas Andrew, and Cade McBee, husband of Jenny Elizabeth. JC graduated from Waco High School in 1953. He served in the US Navy and the US Air Force and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. In 1960, he graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Throughout his life he remained a loyal supporter of Baylor University, having served on the Baylor Estate Planning Council, the University Development Board, and the Old Main Society. He was a life member of the Baylor Alumni Association and the Baylor University Presidents Club. JC was also a regional chairman of the Selective Service System, president of the American Lung Association of Texas, a member of the Lampasas Kiwanis Club and the Lampasas Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Lampasas Lions Club, chaired the city of Lampasas Board of Adjustments, and was a founding trustee of the Library Foundation of Lampasas. JC had been a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lampasas where he served as an ordained Elder and Clerk of the Session. He most recently was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lampasas. JC Ewing will be remembered as a planner of financial investment, a solver of accounting issues, and a wizard with numbers and their various problems. He will also be remembered for his generous spirit and his determined loyalty, his love of family and friends, and his incomparable ability to provide for his family and others near to his heart. He administered to his clients with compassion, patience and gentle guidance. His counsel was sought often during times which were uncertain or confusing, guiding clients to make difficult financial decisions which would impact them the remainder of their lives. His computer has gone blank, his adding machine no longer chatters, and the challenges with numbers have stopped, but his life surges forward in the hearts and minds of all those he touched within whom he planted a seed of loyalty, honor and love, not the least of whom is Maggie, his devoted King Charles Cavalier Spaniel who misses his gentle touch.
