Roy Dexter (Coach) Bassinger, longtime resident of Orange, Texas, died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family on June 17, 2014. He was born January 1, 1928 to H.L. and Sallie Belle Bassinger in Mertens, Texas. He discovered his passion for sports in the 5th grade and was involved in sports throughout his life. He played football in high school, at Hill Jr. College and at TCU. His coaching career spanned 41 years starting in Lampasas, and included positions in Waco, Hillsboro, Killeen, Orange and Orangefield. He was a lifelong Cowboys fan and an avid golfer. He was a loving husband and father and will be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy McGuire Bassinger, and his three daughters and their families, Suzanne and Julius Albonetti, Julie and Matt Graham, and Patricia and Stuart Poet, and his four grandsons, Adam and David Graham, and Christopher and Michael Albonetti. He is also survived by his brother Bernarr Bassinger. The family thanks the staff of the River City Hospice in Orange for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can made be to this organization.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday June 21, 2014 at Sneed Funeral Chapel.
Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery.
