Glendower Wade McMahan, born on November 24, 1921, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2014 at the age of 92.
Mr. McMahan was a life-long resident of Lampasas County. He was born in Moline, Texas, the second of five children born to Clara May Hale and David Homer McMahan. He was a graduate of Lometa High School.
Following military service in England during World War II, where he served as a personnel sergeant attached to the 316th Station Hospital in southern England, Mr. McMahan returned to Texas where he met his wife of 66 years, Jonell Yeary McMahan. They made their home in Lometa, where they raised their family.
Mr. McMahan spent his life’s work in ranching and business, and was well-known in the wool and mohair industry in Texas, first working as bookkeeper and general manager for Lucius M. Stephens and Company for many years, and later purchasing the business operation from Mick Stephens and Gordon McCann. Mr. McMahan was active in community and business enterprises in the area, serving as past master of Lometa Masonic Lodge No. 514, past president of the Lometa School Board, a director of the former Citizen’s State Bank of Lometa, and director of the Hamilton County Electric Cooperative.
He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Susan Kay McMahan Leinneweber, and his parents, Clara and Homer McMahan.
Mr. McMahan is survived by his wife, Jonell Yeary McMahan, daughters Carol Ann McMahan Jones of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Janie McMahan and husband, Jim Duncan, of Austin, and son, Brian McMahan and wife, Mona, of Austin; siblings Stanton McMahan of Jal, New Mexico, Joyce McMahan Boyd and husband, Howard, of Snyder, Texas, Mary Lou McMahan Goodson of Fort Worth, Texas, and Jack McMahan of Midland, Texas, as well as 13 grandchildren (Christie, Chad, Jeff, Melissa, Philip, Daniela, Hunter, Wade, Yarik, Ilya, Travis, Will, and Sam), seven great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday April 3, 2014 with funeral services on Friday April 4, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Lometa. Burial will follow at Senterfitt Cemetery near Lometa. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.
