John Weldon Roberson, Jr.

John Weldon “Johnny” Roberson, Jr., age 76, passed away peacefully at his rural Lampasas County Home on March 5, 2014 following a lengthy illness. Johnny was born in Atlanta, TX on December 6, 1937, the son of the late John Weldon “Dub” Roberson and the late Annebel Haralson Roberson. Johnny graduated from Devine High School in 1955 and attended the A&M College of Texas, graduating with a BS in Entomology in 1959. While attending Texas A&M, Johnny was a member of Squadron 17 of the Corps of Cadets and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force upon graduation, serving at Blytheville Air Force Base in Blytheville, AR. On August 6, 1960, Johnny married the former Mary Ann Holmes in Brownfield, TX, his devoted wife of 53 ½ years. In 1966, Johnny began a 30 year career with the Federal Land Bank of Texas. He settled in Lampasas, TX in 1972 where he served as the President of the Federal Land Bank Association of Lampasas until his retirement in 1996. Johnny was an active member of the Lampasas community, a long time member of the Kiwanis Club and a performing member of the Lampasas Community Theater. He volunteered for many years with Lampasas schools as a field entomologist, coaching and assisting high school students in building their insect collections and speaking to elementary school classes about insects. He also regularly volunteered as an official and timer for school track meets. Johnny’s interests included cattle and sheep ranching, and he spent years and countless hours working on the pecan orchard outside his home, continuously improving the quality and volume of pecans it produced. He was an avid fan of Texas A&M sports, particularly football and track & field, and a longtime member of the Lampasas County Texas A&M Club. Johnny was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, who delighted in spending time with his family and friends. He also served as a host parent on two occasions for foreign exchange students Magnus Nilsson of Stockholm, Sweden and Cecile Menard of Nantes, France as they spent a year living in the United States and attending Lampasas High School. Johnny Roberson is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Roberson of Lampasas, two sons, John Weldon “Trey” Roberson, III of Smithville, TX and Barry Tane Roberson and wife Susie Britt Roberson of Brentwood, TN, a grandson John Weldon “Jake” Roberson IV of New Orleans, LA, and three granddaughters Rachel Hanna Roberson of Austin, TX and Annebel Leigh Roberson and Lilly Paige Roberson of Brentwood, TN. He is also survived by his sister, Beth Ann Noak Bundrett and husband Alford Bundrett of Devine, TX, cousins James Sanders and Butch Roberson of Devine, TX along with a number of other cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Johnny Roberson will be held at the Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas, TX Sunday March 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverends J.W. Hutherson and George Lumpkin presiding. Visitation will be Saturday March 8, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at the Howard Family Cemetery near Devine, TX Monday March 10, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. The Family would like to acknowledge and thank Johnny’s niece and nephew Laurie and Scott Scantlin along with Gloria Cruz and AseraCare Hospice for ministering and caring for Johnny in his home during his final days. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to AseraCare Hospice or the Lampasas County Texas A&M Club.
