Marvin B. Ware

Marvin Burt Ware, age 93 of Lampasas, TX died Sunday November 10, 2013 at a local nursing home. He was born June 16, 1920 in Snyder, TX the youngest of 5 children. His family moved to Corpus Christi when he was 9. Marvin enlisted in the Army in October 1941 and a short time later transferred to the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Kelley Field in San Antonio when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was crew chief engineer for the B-26 Marauder. He assisted in training of pilots during the early years of the war. They flew day and night training missions. Marvin earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and went on to serve in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946 with these commendations; American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. Marvin moved to Lampasas county in 1946 where he ranched. He met Tona Elbertine Lively of Adamsville and they were married September 18, 1951. He later went to work at Ft. Hood as aircraft maintenance foreman. Marvin and Elbertine were married for 62 years. They had a happy and loving marriage. Marvin always greeted his family with a twinkle in his eye and a sweet smile that told you he was happy to see you. The family has many special memories of being with him on camping trips, fishing, sitting on the patio visiting, making ice cream, family birthdays, holidays, barbecues and being with him at his shop. Woodworking was his hobby and the family enjoyed going to the shop to see what he was making. Marvin was honored by his family in 2004 with a brick placed in the wall of the Lubbock Area Veterans War Memorial. It is the largest memorial in the U.S. outside of Washington. The brick is inscribed, “ Marvin B. Ware Army Air Corps 1941-1946 World War II, Lampasas, TX.” Like many of the Greatest Generation, he didn’t talk much about his military service. He was a quiet man, but his family knew he was proud of his service and pleased to honored in that way. Survivors include wife, Elbertine Ware of Lampasas Daughters; Linda Hood and husband Bill of Round Rock Joan Bear of Lampasas Son, Danny Ware and fiancé, Diane Genz of Lamapsas 7 grandchildren; Mark Hood, Lauren and Michael Hood, Kyle Butts, Kelsi Davis and husband Brandon, Mindi Pratus and Husband Charlie, Tamara Elkins and husband Josh 6 great-grandchildren; Kylee and Brooke Butts, Hagan and Hartley Davis, Jax and Kage Pratus Sister-in-law, Burnell Hamilton of Lampasas and many nieces and nephews. Papaw, was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lillie Pearl Ware, by brothers, Bob Ware and wife Juanita and Leonard Ware and wife Marie, by sisters, Jettone Caldwell and husband Edward and Juanita Scotka and husband Albert. Visitation for Mr. Ware will be on Monday November 11, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday November 12, 2013 at 10: a.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Townsen Cemetery.
