George Atwill Elder, 71, died peacefully on October 4, 2013 at the Santa Fe Hospital in Temple, TX after a battle with cancer. He was born on July 30, 1942 in Petersburg, VA to Nellie Aldridge Elder and Atwill Moss Elder. He graduated from Colonial Heights High School, Colonial Heights, VA. He married Patricia on September 13, 1975. George loved rebuilding old cars, was a long time NASCAR fan, and loved watching Alabama football. He retired in March 2000 at the rank of Lieutenant from the Prince George County Sherriff’s Department, in Prince George, VA, after 27 years of dedicated service. George and Patricia moved to Lampasas, TX in October 2004. He was a member of Church of the Hills, in Lometa, TX, and worked at the Lampasas Builder’s Mart in Lampasas, TX. He was preceded in death by his mother Nellie Aldridge Elder, his father Atwill Moss Elder, and a sister Bettie Elder Belvin. He is survived by his wife of 38 years. He is also survived by sons: Michael G. Elder (Dewey) of Powhatan, VA and Jason W. Lewis (Jacksonville, NC), daughters: Kelly Elder Knupp (Prince George, VA), Shannon O. Elder (Austin, TX), and Neely Elder Arrington (Mike) (Chesterfield, VA). He had 8 grandchildren: Jensen Gallaher (Norfolk, VA), Tayler Gallaher(Prince George, VA), Kara Elder (Chesterfield, VA), Cody and Madelyn Lewis (Richlands, NC), Logan and Loren Knupp (Prince George, VA), and Benjamin Arrington (Chesterfield, VA). The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staffs of Dr. Clay Gowen, Scott & White Hospital, and Scott & White Hospice. A memorial service will be held at Church of the Hills in Lometa, TX on Monday October 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scott & White Hospice in his name.
