David Glynn Mitchell, age 59, passed away in his sleep on the evening of Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at Central Texas Physical Rehabilitation Hospital in Austin, Texas. He had been suffering from the effects of a broken left leg and was undergoing physical rehabilitation therapy at the time of his death. David was born August 26, 1954 in Fort Worth, Texas and grew up and lived in central Texas most of his life. He is the son of Glynn Mitchell and Evelyn Wren Mitchell Ashey. He graduated from Bastrop High School and then married Susan Garner on October 20, 1973 at Lampasas First Baptist Church. He retired after over 30 years of service as a road maintenance supervisor with the Texas Department of Transportation in August 2004. He and Susan moved from Austin back to Lampasas County full time in 2011.
David was known for being able to understand, plan, and accomplish all the farm and ranch projects that needed to be completed at the family’s Lampasas Ranch. The family quickly learned as early as 1973 to run all major farm and ranch projects through David and seek his guidance and assistance in getting them accomplished. He had a great sense of humor and provided jokes to better put those around him at ease. He was a longtime Mason and enjoyed John Wayne movies and Louis L’amour books.
David loved his family and was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. A life changing even for David was when his 8 year old grandson, Ethan Mitchell, preceded him in death from leukemia in August 2007. When David was talking about his leg problems, he related a conversation that he had with Ethan that kept him from being depressed. Ethan told David that his great grandmother was 92 years old and David told him “I hope you live that long” and Ethan then said “well Paw Paw, you have to take what life gives you.”
He is survived by his wife of 40 years Susan Mitchell of Lampasas; his son Dave Mitchell and wife Nicole of Lampasas, his son Ben Mitchell and wife Joy of Cypress, Texas; son Jake Mitchell of Lampasas; and his sister Linda Honn and husband Mike of Saginaw, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Cara and Calum Mitchell of Lampasas and Logan and Elyssa Mitchell of Cypress, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Ethan Mitchell.
Visitation was Saturday from 6-8 pm at Sneed Funeral Chapel; services were held at First Baptist Church of Lampasas on Sunday at 2 pm with internment following at Hines Chapel Cemetery in Adamsville, Texas.
The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of one’s choice.
