George William Reed Jr., 68, of Lometa left this earth on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 in Lampasas.
Visitation will be at Sneed Funeral Chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Thursday August 22, 2013. Graveside services will be on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Center Cemetery near Lometa.
George was born at Rollins Brook Hospital in Lampasas to George William Sr. and Hazel Hicks Reed. He was raised on the family ranch on Sims Creek near Lometa. He graduated from Lometa High School in 1963. After graduation, he went to work as an agent for Sante Fe Railroad. George served his country as a solider in the Texas National Guard in Lampasas. His unit was activated for duty and he was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma and in Vietnam. Returning from Vietnam, he resumed work for the railroad.
In 1984, he moved back to the family ranch where he became ranching partners with his mother. George enjoyed hunting and fishing. His home life, family, and friends meant everything to him. In 1993, George retired from the railroad after 30 years of service and then went to work for the County of Lampasas in Precinct 3, where he was employed at the time of his death. George was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lometa and a life member of AMVETS. In 2012, the land George loved and owned received the prestigious Family Land Heritage designation that is awarded to Texas families who have kept their land in continuous ownership and operations as a family agricultural enterprise for 100 years or more.
He is survived by his son; Trey Weston Reed of Houston
2 sisters; Faye Long of Harker Heights and Dorothy Briggs and her husband, James of Lampasas
Sister-in-law; Janis Reed
And several nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother; Tom Reed, and a niece.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Center Cemetery Inc. or the Marcia Briggs Memorial Scholarship.
