Longtime Lampasas resident Sammie “Sam” Edward Potts, 82, died Sunday, November 11, 2012 in Round Rock, Texas. Sam was born September 15, 1930 in Pierce, Oklahoma, the son of Hector and Birdie Potts. He served in the Army from 1951-1953. In 1958, Sam earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Sul Ross State University. He earned his Masters in Education in 1962. Sam was an educator, administrator, and coach for Texas public high schools from 1956 through 1990. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing golf, cards and dominoes, gardening, and making plum jelly and peanut brittle. Sam was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle.
He is survived by his devoted wife of thirty seven years, Erna Potts. He is also survived by four sisters; Geraldean Hammond, Josephine Brown, Jessie Mae Carson, and Annie Brown, all of Oklahoma, five children; Mike Potts, Valerie Potts Stapp, Margie Thurman and husband Toby, Denise Sutton and husband Tom, and Skip Smith; twelve grandchildren; Cody Sutton and wife Vickie, Russell Sutton, Lacey Lee and husband Jason, Phillip Stapp and wife Kenna, Dusty Stapp, Ty Stapp, Sterling Stapp, Justin Thurman, Lauren Thurman, Megan Thurman, Madison Smith, Minley Smith; three great-grandchildren, Tatum Lee Bryce Stapp, Trible Adam Lee, and Emma Ann Sutton.
Sam’s grandchildren, who cherished him, would tell you “Poppy” taught them the values of life through his devotion to them, fun, and play. Sam had a special compassion for children. Any donations made to a children’s charity of your choice in his name would be quite an honor.
Graveside services for Sam Potts will be held in Lampasas at Oak Hill Cemetery on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 13, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas, Texas.
